2014 Annual Recreation Workshop

It's so life giving to engage in good conversations with people! This week, I have been very fortunate to lead the music at the 2014 Annual Recreation Workshop Conference for PCUSA Youth Workers at Montreat Conference Center in Montreat, NC.  Like always, coming to the mountains is simply majestic. However, this week has been very special. I am thankful for all the energy that you all have given me and the opportunity to sing and dance with laughter and joy.

Thank you Jay Banasiak, Aaron Houghton, Cliff Haddox, Joyce, and the master of the strings: Eric Nanz. Working with you guys it is simply too much fun!

I also want to thank the wonderful group of folks who decided to join me in a 4 day workshop where we look at worship, music, theology, social dynamics and spiritual transformation. Our conversations were deep and thoughtful. I hope, we all had an opportunity to learn new things and be reminded of the ever present love around us.

Last but not least, thanks Mark and Cheryl Goodman-Morris, Noelle Gibbs, Ashley Pogue and Mark Montgomery! Your way of presenting the Gospel through the arts and theater was exactly the much needed boost of creativity and inspiration I needed! I feel very honored to get to be part of your creative and innovative ministry and I look forward to passing it along.

May the music around you transform your soul with new life!

Vintage & Visionary - Roanoke, VA

This past weekend, I had the wonderful opportunity to preach, lead a workshop and keynote at 2nd Presbyterian Church in Roanoke, VA. Rev. Elizabeth Smith, Rev. Dr. Gorge Anderson and the whole congregation welcomed me with open arms and lots of love.  I am grateful for such wonderful opportunity and good time!

With the youth of the Roanoke area, we explored the origins of Christian worship and the importance of having and celebrating the arts especially music in worship. We talked about the need to think about worship as a relevant expression of our world, time and context. This helps us to continue to look at worship in a personal way but also as a thing we do and only comes alive in and through community.  I had the wonderful joy to engage in this musical journey with Eric Nanz on the guitar, his wife Alana on the keys and Eric's sister: Lindsay on the sax.  Thank you for sharing your gifts and passion for music with me and the wonderful group of young people that night!

I look forward to continue this conversation in other places and with other communities.  But more than anything, to empower our young generation to re-embrace worship in a new vibrant way as they show us the ways in which the Spirit of Love continues to transform us.

If you sing, sing from the top of your lungs. Sing a new song!

If you dance, dance with joy. Let your whole body become the movement that brings about healing.

Let your true passions and joys celebrate the presence of love and grace with and through one another!

Let's be vintage. Let's be visionary!

Hope to see you soon!

Triennium Reflections

Words can only attempt to express the overwhelming experience I had leading the music at the Presbyterian Youth Triennium 2013 at Purdue University. The opportunity to work with amazing musicians like Leslie Rodriguez, Matt Melton and Marcus Hill (Jericho Road) was incredible!  Meeting and hanging out with Quillan from The Roe Family Band and the rest of their crew was a genuine moment of immediate friendship and unity. Worshiping and singing with over 5, 000 youth is one of those "once in a lifetime" experiences that changes you forever.  I want to thank everybody that was there and allowed us to be one through the universal language of music and love.

Thanks again!

Hope to see you all soon!

New Release: Una Cancion de Paz

I want to share with you my new song: Una Cancion de Paz/A Song of Peace.

I started working on this song a few years ago and never had the chance to finish it. An invitation to work on a very special project called www.alifewellloved.org arrived and gave me the last push to finalize the song. A Life Well Loved, is a special compilation of songs in memory of my dear friend Aimee Wallace Buchanan. She was an amazing human being and a true example of grace, love, and compassion. I am honored to be part of this project and hope you take the time to check out her wonderful ministry and legacy.

The song was recorded and produced with the collaboration of Jeffrey Harper. It is both in English and Spanish and centered around the idea of unity, contemplation, peace and love. Many times, we just go about our lives without stoping for a moment an notice the blessings and gifts of the present moment. When we do this, we have an opportunity to center ourselves and connect with one another. This brings us together as one people and offers us the space to overcome our fears, pains and sorrows.  I hope you will enjoy the song and embrace the invitation to hear the echoes of a new song, a new song of love.

Click the audio link below or go to the front page of the website and click play! Enjoy!

Here are the lyrics...

Una Canción de Paz

Si me detengo un momento,

Puedo escuchar las aves cantar.

Si me detengo un momento,

Puedo apreciar tu creación.

Y es que tu estas en mi.

Puedo sentir tu amor.

Puedo cantar una nueva canción de amor,

una canción de paz.

Ayúdame a ver con tus ojos

Y poner a un lado mi orgullo,

Derrumbar todas las barreras

Verte dentro y fuera de mi.

Déjame ver mas allá

Restaurar y perdonar

Cantar una nueva canción de amor,

una canción de paz

We are one together

No more pain or sorrow

I hear echoes of a new song of love

I hear echoes of a new song of hope,

a new song of love

Cantar una nueva canción de amor,

una canción de paz

Conversations of the Soul

Guys, one of the projects that I will start working with is exploring the message that so many songs gift us with. Many times there is always a song or a melody that for some reason gives you healing and helps you have a better day. I will start posting some thoughts about my personal reflection on some of my favorite songs and what they do to my mind, body, and soul. I would love for you to be part this process with me. Let's explore and talk about your favorite songs and see where that takes us. Feel free to send me a message or respond to this blog with your ideas and suggestions.
